Everyone has a story to tell.
Being part of a neighborhood means that we realize everyone has a story to tell. Aside from all the differences that may separate us, we have common hopes, values and dreams. These are the stories of some of the people whose lives have been positively impacted by Arbor Good Neighbor House.
Recently, a young woman visited the Good Neighbors Personal Essentials Pantry, one of the 1,966 household visits to GNPEP in 2023. She appeared ill and over coffee with a GNPEP volunteer, admitted she was living in her car in the bitter winter cold. Storing all she owned in her car, using convenience store bathrooms, she moved around town so that no one noticed her and complained. She disappeared for several months. One day, she returned looking healthy, carrying a box of products to share with others. She had found housing and a job and wanted to help other people who were facing challenging times.
Or imagine the fear of a family who had to quickly exit their homeland with only the clothes on their back because of war and terrorism. They arrived in Madison not knowing the language, lacking housing, a job, basic necessities – and friends. Volunteers at Arbor Good Neighbor House offered the Personal Essentials Pantry to help meet their daily needs and put the refugees in contact with local refugee organizations.
